Work
Stephan Vehmeijer has been working as an orthopedic surgeon since 2004. He studied medicine in Leiden and, after graduating, worked as a staff physician at the BIS Foundation where he was ultimately responsible for medical affairs. In 1998, he started his training as an orthopedic surgeon, which he completed at Leiden University Medical Centre, the Hague Medical Centre (HMC, location Westeinde) and the Red Cross Hospital in The Hague. During his training, he obtained his PhD from Leiden University in 2002 with the topic: Bacterial contamination of bone allografts. Since 2005, he has worked as a consultant in orthopedics at the Reinier de Graaf Gasthuis in Delft and from 2020 at the ReinierHaga Orthopedic Centre. In 2016, he co-founded Orthoparc, where he worked as an Orthopedic consultant until 2023. From 2016 to 2022, he was also medical director here.
Since 2023, he has a position as an Orthopedic consultant at Xpert Clinics.
Memberships
Stephan Vehmeijer has been a member of the Dutch Orthopedic Association (NOV) since 2000. Within the NOV, he has been active as a board member of the Dutch Hip Society (https://heup.orthopeden.org/) since 2015 and as a member of the Committee on Quality Audits (CKV) since 2021. He was also a member of the working group that developed the most recent guideline Total Hip Prosthesis in 2018.
Internationally, he has been a member of the European Hip Society (EHS) since 2009, of which he is National Representative for the Netherlands. Since 2017, he has been an International Member of the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons (AAHKS)
Expertise
Stephan Vehmeijer has been placing total hip replacements through the anterior approach since 2007. In addition, he performs many revision surgeries of the hip, mostly also via the anterior approach. He is also an expert on Rapid Recovery (ERAS); a program aimed at faster and better recovery after hip surgery placement. On 1 April 2014, he was the first surgeon in the Netherlands to place a total hip replacement in day surgery as the start of a successful program, where patients were routinely allowed to go home on the day of surgery.
In 2016, he co-founded Orthoparc, an independent clinic for innovative Orthopedics. This is the first clinic in Europe where all patients are routinely allowed and able to go home on the day of surgery for a total hip or knee replacement.
Congresses and courses
Stephan Vehmeijer is an active speaker, moderator and chairman at many (inter)national congresses. He gives many international courses to orthopedists on the anterior approach and he guides orthopedists in switching to this approach through visits to their hospital.
In addition, he regularly speaks at conferences on Rapid Recovery and outpatient total hip replacement. He also regularly receives orthopedists from all over the world in his clinic who want to learn about the anterior approach, or learn more about outpatient surgery or Rapid Recovery.
Transparency Register
Stephan Vehmeijer is a consultant for Zimmer Biomet Inc, a US based company that develops and manufactures orthopedic implants. He gives (inter)national lectures and courses and helps orthopedists around the world to increase their knowledge and improve their technique. He also is a member, with several other international experts, of the Rapid Recovery Advisory Board, and of various development teams that help improve techniques and implants.
According to the Medical Devices Code of Conduct, he is paid only for the actual number of hours worked (https://www.gmh.nu/). His annual consultant income is listed in the publicly accessible Healthcare Transparency Register.
Presentations
Stephan Vehmeijer lectures all over the world in helps orthopedists to learn and further improve the anterior approach. He also gives many lectures on Rapid Recovery (enhanced recovery) and total hip arthroplasty surgery in an outpatient setting.
